Malarone Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, headache, or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: loss of appetite, weight loss, unusual fatigue, dizziness. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: severe vomiting or diarrhea, fever, muscle or back pain. An allergic reaction to MALARONE is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
How To Use Malarone
MALARONE: Take MALARONE by mouth usually once daily with food or a milky drink; or take as directed by your doctor. Your dosage and how long you will take MALARONE will depend on the reason for its use (prevention or active infection). Dosage for children is based on the child's weight and the reason for its use (prevention or active infection). If you vomit within 1 hour of taking MALARONE, repeat the dose.
Malarone Uses
Atovaquone/proguanil is a combination drug used to treat or prevent malaria.
Malarone Precautions
Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, previous treatments with MALARONE, recent severe vomiting or diarrhea, any allergies. If, for any reason, you stop taking MALARONE before completing the entire amount prescribed, consult your doctor promptly. You may need to have different medication prescribed. Caution is advised when using MALARONE in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. MALARONE should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Also use protective clothing, insect repellents, and bed nets if you are pregnant and traveling to an area at high risk for malaria. Discuss all risks and benefits with your doctor. One of the drugs (proguanil) in this product passes into breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
Malarone Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription drugs you may use, especially of: tetracycline; metoclopramide; rifamycins (e.g., rifampin, rifabutin); other products containing proguanil. MALARONE may interfere with certain laboratory tests (e.g., transaminases). Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use MALARONE. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
Malarone Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include stomach pain, rash, hair loss, or scaly skin on the palms of the hands and bottom of the feet.
Malarone Notes
Do not share MALARONE with others. Laboratory and/or medical tests may be performed to monitor your progress. Use protective clothing, insect repellents, and bed nets if traveling to an area at risk for malaria.
Missed Malarone Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Malarone Storage
